Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi dedicated a 5G Use Case Lab to IIT Palakkad today as part of the '100 5G Labs Initiative' by the Department of Telecommunications. The lab was awarded during the inaugural session of the 7th edition of the India Mobile Congress.
A total of 100 such labs were dedicated to various institutes of higher education as a part of this significant initiative through video conferencing. The event was live-streamed on the campus and was attended by officials from BSNL, more than 600 students, faculty members, and staff from engineering colleges in Palakkad and Coimbatore. The award of the 5G use case lab will play a crucial role in boosting innovation and entrepreneurial activities at IIT Palakkad and will contribute to India's technological advancements. This initiative will provide students, faculty members, and researchers with the opportunity to work in a 5G environment and prepare them for the 6G era.
These 5G labs will offer access to 5G setups and test kits for startups, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the vicinity. These state-of-the-art use case labs will be equipped with AR-VR kits, drones, IoT gateways, routers, and other resources to meet the lab's needs. Setting up such a facility will be pivotal in the experimentation and development of 5G applications in various socioeconomic sectors such as education, health, power, urban management, mining, tourism, sports, security, and e-governance. Facilities like these reinforce IIT Palakkad's role in connecting industries and academia for the greater social good.
To mark the occasion, IIT Palakkad organized campus tours and lab visits for the students from engineering colleges in and around Palakkad and Coimbatore. The students were taken to facilities such as the innovation lab. They were given familiarization sessions and demonstrations of various advanced equipment such as 3D printers and high-performance computers etc..
