Education
- I completed my integrated Bachelor of Science-Master of Science (BS-MS dual degree) at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Thiruvananthapuram (2010-2015). My major was Mathematics, with physics as my minor. 📚
- During this time, I also had the privilege of sharing knowledge as a guest lecturer at Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial (BCM) College for Women in Kottayam. Teaching and inspiring young minds—what a rewarding experience! 🌱
- My intellectual pursuits reached their zenith when I embarked on a captivating PhD journey. In 2016, I joined the IITB-Monash Research Academy, and after years of dedication and exploration, I defended my dissertation on 18 June 2021. 🎓
Postdoctoral Adventures
- The postdoctoral phase beckoned, and I eagerly answered the call. From July to December 2021, I donned the hat of an institute postdoctoral research fellow at the illustrious Department of Mathematics, IIT Bombay. The thrill of discovery and collaboration fueled my days! 🔬
- But wait, there’s more! In the picturesque city of Milan, I continued my academic escapades. Under the guidance of Prof. Andreas Veeser, I delved into fascinating research from January 2022 to February 2023. The cobbled streets of Milan echoed with mathematical musings! 🌆
Present and Beyond
- Fast forward to the present—I now proudly serve as an Assistant Professor (Grade I) at the vibrant IIT Palakkad. Since 1 March 2023, I’ve been nurturing young minds, igniting curiosity, and fostering a love for mathematics. 🌈
Remember, every equation you solve, every theorem you prove, and every student you inspire adds a splash of colour to the canvas of academia. Keep shining, keep exploring, and keep spreading the joy of mathematics! 🌟📊✨

Research
Mathematical modelling and numerical analysis
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad. My research interests span various mathematical domains, with a focus on problems from life sciences. Here are the key aspects of my research:
Mathematical Modelling:
This involves deriving mathematical models for various physical problems. My work includes applications in areas such as wound healing and the growth of avascular tumours. I employ multiphase fluid flow and mixture theory to formulate these models. My research contributes to understanding complex biological processes through mathematical descriptions.
Numerical Schemes and Scientific Computing:
I design and implement numerical schemes (finite element and finite volume schemes) to solve mathematical models. My work involves error analysis and convergence studies for spatially fourth-order parabolic problems, such as the Biharmonic equation and the extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation. These numerical methods play a crucial role in simulating and analysing real-world phenomena.
Theoretical and Numerical Analysis:
We conduct rigorous theoretical analysis of mathematical models. These investigations include linear and nonlinear elasticity, which are essential for understanding material behaviour.

Research Group
There are three PhD students in the group now.
Gokul SanthoshI am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Finite Element Methods for Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) under the guidance of Dr. Gopikrishnan Chirappurathu Remesan in the Department of Mathematics at IIT Palakkad. Prior to this, I completed my B.Sc. degree in 2021 from CMS College, Kottayam, Kerala, and my M.Sc. in 2023 from IIT Palakkad. On April 17, 2023, I transitioned to the M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree program. Additionally, I participated in an NCM Workshop on Finite Element Methods at IISER Thiruvananthapuram. My research interests primarily lie in numerical analysis and PDEs.”Alphonsa GeorgeCurrently, I am immersed in the pursuit of my Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis, guided by Dr. Gopikrishnan Chirappurathu Remesan within the Department of Mathematics at IIT Palakkad. My academic voyage commenced with the completion of my M.Sc. at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kerala, following my B.Sc. degree at BCM College, Kottayam. Throughout my educational journey, I actively engaged in enriching workshops such as MTTS and YTN, nurturing a passion for scholarly exploration. My research endeavors are deeply rooted in the realms of Finite Element Methods, Partial Differential Equations, and the broader domain of Numerical Analysis.”Soumyajit GhoshI’m currently pursuing PhD in Numerical Analysis under the supervision of Dr. Gopikrishnan Chirappurathu Remesan in Department of Mathematics at IIT Palakkad. I’ve completed my BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from RKM Residential College, University of Calcutta in 2021 followed by MSc in Mathematics and Computing from NIT Hamirpur in 2023. I’ve completed two summer internships primarily on Number Theory at IIT Indore in 2021 and IIT Ropar in 2023 respectively. My MSc dissertation lies in the intersection of Fractional Differential Equations, Control theory and Functional Analysis. I participated and presented my research in the Annual Conference of Calcutta Mathematical Society named ISPMS-24. Now, my primary research focus lies in Finite element methods for PDEs and numerical analysis in broader sense -
