Expertise
Dr. B. Sridharan is working in computational and experimental hydraulics with a focus on free surface flow modeling. His research covers urban flooding, dam breaks, levee breaches, storm surges, and coastal and estuarine dynamics. He developed the Integrated River and Ocean Modeling System (IROMS), which is capable of simulating fluvial, pluvial, and coastal floods. His IROMS-Fluvial-Pluvial model is ten times more efficient than existing models, enabling real-time flood forecasting for Chennai. His IROMS-surge model accurately simulates coastal flooding along the Indian coast. Dr. Sridharan has also contributed to the hydrological and hydraulic assessments at Chennai Airport, identifying the causes of the 2015 floods and recommending improvements to the stormwater drainage system and compound walls. In Kerala's Kuttanad region, his involvement in hydraulic studies identified optimal sites for flood regulators and proposed new channels to divert water through the Thottappally spillway. Dr. B. Sridharan specializes in stormwater modeling and drainage network performance analysis in Chennai. As a hydraulic model review expert for the city's real-time flood forecasting system, he provides critical insights. He remains active in teaching, research, and consultancy, with publications in top journals.
